The 46-year-old Capote actor began renting a $10,000-a-month apartment in
Bethune Street in Manhattan's Greenwich Village in October after moving out of
the nearby family home he previously shared with longtime partner Mimi
O'Donnell. It was here that his body was found yesterday by close friend and
playwright David Bar Katz, who had been asked to check on him by Miss O'Donnell
after the actor failed to pick up his children. Mr Hoffman and Miss O'Donnell,
pictured right in 2008, had been together for 14 years and had three children,
Cooper, 10, Tallulah, 7 and Willa, 5, pictured centre. The actor appeared
'slightly dishevelled and pasty' at January's Sundance Film Festival - his last
public appearance - and refused to give interviews. However, he did pose for a
sombre portrait, shown left.
